About the film
Kolkata is in danger as the brown hyena, an evil force, threatens the city. Deepak Chatterjee, a long-forgotten detective created by pulp-fiction author Samarendranath Pandey, better known by his pen name Sri Swapankumar, emerges from his web of pride and sorrow to save the city of Ananda. But Mr. Swapankumar soon writes a crazy story that complicates Deepak’s fate! Can the madcap detective save his city and himself.
Every now and then there are movies that play with the nature of adaptation. Negotiating Hyenar Kobole himself. Sri Swapankumar’s work should be adapted for the big screen, full of gore, violence and mindless thrillers. The leading man, Detective Deepak Chatterjee, has a lot in common with vigilantes like Batman as opposed to brainiacs like Byomkesh or Feluda. That’s what Debaloi did. By bringing life characters that the audience can relate to, he continues the complete lack of logic and surrealism in his stories. From Gondhoraj momo to Rabindrasangeet, Satyajit Ray to Anupam Roy, films honor pop culture with enough Easter eggs and subtle references.
The film’s color scheme is reminiscent of director Montou Pilot’s web series, though not as dark. The same color scheme is ingeniously adapted to suit a PG audience, with professional cameras tracking pink wigs or traversing the streets of an imaginary Chinatown (hats off to Sri Swapankumar’s China Lodge, perhaps). Even sometimes cartoons, mixing in CGI is good to emphasize the absurdity of the situation. Debaloi Bhattacharya has created the takumar-juli genre where imagination can turn tears into diamonds and spaceships facilitate romance, all because of the absurdity of Deepak Chatterjee’s character.
Despite the slow start, the film picks up a lot of pace in the second half and remains predictable. As the story progresses, it is revealed that the plot components are meaningless as Sri Swapankumar is known for his holes.
Abir easily gets into Deepak Chatterjee’s character. It seems to have been written with this character in mind. Shruti Das as Tashi is a bit stiff to begin with but makes up for it as the film progresses. Pratik Dutta as Ratanlal is an interesting detail and adds to the laughs, while Loknath Dey, Sandeep Bhattacharya and Goutam Haldar play integral roles. Paran Bandopadhyay deserves a special mention for his excellent performance as the late writer Sri Swapankumar.
Music and voice acting are also good, Kanu Kohe Rai, Foli Foli and Rocket Utshob deserve a special mention.
The movie has a long running time, but the dialogues, discussions and references will keep you engaged and engaged till the end. Badami Hyenaar Kobole Sri Swapankumarer’s Badami Hyenaar Kobole is an all-out thriller that makes no sense, but makes for a great watch.
